HomeLocalAlpine native named USS ALABAMA CrewmateAlpine native named USS ALABAMA CrewmateTue, March 2, 2021 by SylacaugaNews.com Digital TeamSHARE NOW MOBILE Ala. – Although Mobile Bay may be a few hours away, for one local native, representing one of the state’s most iconic symbols has sparked a great opportunity.Grace Abernathy of Alpine was recently named one of the USS ALABAMA’s six Crewmates.The USS ALABAMA Crewmate program was founded in 1967 as an ambassador program for the Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile. Every year, a group of women are chosen to represent USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park at local and state events. The Crewmates help promote the Park and tourism throughout the state, but most importantly serve as official hostess at the Park.“Being chosen as a Crewmate is truly the chance of a lifetime,” said Abernathy. “I have fallen in love with the city of Mobile, and am so incredibly honored to have the opportunity to represent it, along with Battleship Memorial Park.”Abernathy is sophomore at the University of South Alabama. The 2019 Sylacauga High School graduate is majoring in Professional Health Science. She is the daughter of Jon and Tracy Abernathy.Nearly 300 young women have served as USS ALABAMA Crewmates since the program’s inception. Each of the Crewmates will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship.
