SYLACAUGA, Ala. – A 12-year-old is in custody after threats were made against Nichols-Lawson Middle School.

According to a release from the Sylacauga Police Department, a female student of Nichols-Lawson Middle School is charged with Terrorist Threats First Degree.

The threat was made against Nichols Lawson Middle School from an electronic device owned by the juvenile. The juvenile was transported to Coosa Valley Detention Center in Calhoun County.

SPD says an its investigation division continues to work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies to arrest the person or persons responsible for the terrorist threats made recently to Sylacauga High School.

“The police department takes each threat to our school system seriously and will use every resource available to make sure those responsible are punished,” SPD wrote in its release. “The Sylacauga Police Department will maintain increased patrols at all schools in reference to the recent threats.”

Here is a statement from Sylacauga City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Michele Eller:

“Since this past Friday morning, SCS has been plagued with social media threats that have impacted all of our schools.  The students responsible for sending these messages have all been identified and apprehended. The one SCS student involved is currently headed to the juvenile detention center. These threats will NOT be tolerated.

Parents, I would ask you to please talk to your children about the dangers of posting and sharing threats against schools and classmates on social media. The actions of these students greatly disrupted the learning environment of our schools by causing unnecessary fear and apprehension.

I would like to thank the Sylacauga Police Department for their quick response in this matter from tracking down the culprits to ensuring our buildings had an extra layer of protection both Friday and today. Please do not let social media hoaxes compromise the high-quality education your students are receiving each and every day. We have daily precautions in place to ensure the safety of all employees and students. I cannot tell you what to do as parents, but I can tell you that my own grandchildren were at school both Friday and today. If our schools are safe enough for my grandchildren, I assure you, they are safe enough for yours.

Thank you for your trust as we strive daily to equip our students for excellence.”
