CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – If you’re looking to view a Christmas-themed light show while also escaping the winter cold, DeSoto Caverns might just be the spot for you and your family.
After cancelling last year’s spectacle, DeSoto Caverns’ annual “Christmas in the Cave” event is back in 2021 with a light show based on Silent Night.
In 2019, the Caverns’ organized a fantastic event with carolers, a s’more maker station, and a Christmas movie. However, due to the postponement of 2020’s edition, this year’s version is more of a revamping according to general manager Ryan Burke.
“This year was more of a rebuilding year,” said Burke. “We don’t have the full characters and quests outside like we did in 2019, but we do have these lights set up here in the cave. We wanted to keep the Christmas spirit alive.”
What’s already a beautiful, natural enclosure has now been retooled for the purpose of spreading Christmas cheer throughout the cavern.
“The lights that are on don’t hurt the stalagmites,” Burke explained. “They are not powerful enough and they’re only on for a certain amount of time during the day.”
You can also escape the winter chill outside by huddling in the cave with loved ones as the temperature stays year-round at a comfortable 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
“It’s kind of a shock to a lot of people that haven’t been in a cave,” remarked Burke, “but a good shock. [Visitors] are immediately shedding layers and enjoying the incredible environment down here.”
“Christmas in the Cave” is available for your viewing pleasure until Monday, Jan. 3. Currently, DeSoto Caverns is open to the public Friday through Monday every week.
