SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Police Department is warning residents about the legal and financial consequences of damaging Flock Safety cameras after two separate incidents of vandalism since the cameras were installed in the city.
Police said the most recent incident occurred within the last 24 hours. Authorities did not release details about the damage but emphasized that intentionally destroying, tampering with, or disabling the cameras is a serious offense that could result in criminal prosecution.
Flock Safety cameras are used by law enforcement agencies to help identify vehicles connected to criminal activity and generate investigative leads. Officials said interference with the cameras is considered an attack on a public-safety resource rather than simple property damage.
Depending on the circumstances, individuals accused of damaging the cameras could face a range of criminal charges, including criminal mischief, damage to utilities, obstruction of government operations, and computer tampering. Police said additional charges could be filed based on the specifics of an investigation.
In addition to potential criminal penalties, those found responsible could also face civil liability and be required to pay restitution. Costs may include repairs, replacement of damaged equipment, installation expenses, and other related investigative costs.
“We want to make it clear that intentionally destroying or tampering with a Flock camera is not simply damaging a piece of equipment,” the department said in a statement. “It is interfering with a public-safety resource and may result in criminal and financial consequences.”
