SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council approved several budget amendments, personnel actions, and project-related expenditures during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 4, following a work session that began at 5:00 p.m. in the Faye Hosey Chambers at City Hall.

Among the items approved was a budget amendment of $6,750 for the Sylacauga Police Department. The amendment transfers funds from the department’s Office and Operating Supplies account into Uniform Expense to cover additional costs associated with bulletproof vests and replacement badges.

Council members also approved a budget amendment of $28,325 for the Street Department. The funding will be transferred from a restricted tax revenue account, specifically 4- and 5-cent gas tax funds, into the department’s Sinkhole Repair and Maintenance account to finance asphalt paving work on W Park St.

In other business, the council authorized Mayor Matt Hubbard to sign and enter into construction-related contracts with MBA Engineers for construction inspections and materials testing associated with the new Sylacauga Recreation Center.

The council also approved the use of bond proceeds totaling $11,163.60 for a sound system upgrade at the Isabel Comer Museum and Arts Center.

To assist operations at the Sylacauga Animal Shelter, council members authorized the hiring of two temporary workers for the remainder of fiscal year 2026. Funding for the positions will come from salary funds associated with vacant kennel technician positions.

The council further approved a five percent pay increase for newly appointed Interim Shop Superintendent Thomas Cleghorn, effective Aug. 1.

Additionally, the council approved fiscal year 2026 accounts payable invoices totaling $518,227.48.
