SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga City Schools has welcomed Kermit Baumgartner as the newest member of the Sylacauga City Schools Board of Education.
Baumgartner attended his first official meeting as a board member during the board’s regularly scheduled July meeting.
A resident of Sylacauga since 2020, Baumgartner has a history of community involvement and volunteer service within the school system. Most recently, he served as President of the Sylacauga High School Football Booster Club. His wife, Haley Baumgartner, is a teacher at Indian Valley Elementary School, and the couple’s three children attend Sylacauga City Schools.
Baumgartner said his interest in serving on the board stems from a lifelong commitment to volunteerism and a family background in education and special education. He also brings leadership experience from careers as a pilot in the U.S. Army and the private sector.
“I am excited to serve in my role as a school board member,” Baumgartner said. “Thank you to the City Council for allowing me to serve in this capacity. I look forward to supporting the superintendent and the Sylacauga City School system as we continue to strive toward equipping everyone for excellence.”
Baumgartner said he is encouraged by growth across all four campuses, pointing to improving Advanced Placement and ACT scores as signs of progress. He said preparing students for success after graduation remains a top priority for the school system.
