SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, June 2, with several items of business on the agenda, including consideration of a proposed moratorium affecting certain tobacco, vape, and alcohol-related businesses.

Board appointment interviews will be held prior to the council’s work session. Interviews are scheduled for vacancies on the Sylacauga Board of Education, Commercial Development Authority, Parks and Recreation Board, Sylacauga Utilities Board, and Historical Commission.

The council’s work session will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Faye Hosey Chambers. The regular council meeting will begin immediately following the work session.

Among the items listed under old business is a resolution regarding a one-year moratorium on new businesses whose sales consist of 50 percent or more tobacco, vape, or alcohol products. The proposed suspension would not apply to restaurants or food service establishments where alcohol sales are secondary to the sale of prepared food.

Under new business, council members are expected to consider a resolution awarding a request for qualifications (RFQ) for engineering services related to a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

The council will also consider setting a public hearing for the city’s fiscal year 2027 CDBG grant application.

Additional business includes approval of fiscal year 2026 accounts payable invoices.

The meeting is open to the public.
