FAYETTEVILLE, Ala. — The Fayetteville Lady Wolves continued their strong postseason run Tuesday night with an incredible comeback win over Billingsley in Game 2 of the AHSAA Regional Tournament at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
Earlier in the day, Fayetteville opened tournament play with a dominant 13-3 victory over University Charter before delivering one of its most dramatic wins of the season later that evening.
After surrendering eight runs in the opening inning and trailing 8-1 early against Billingsley, Fayetteville refused to back down. The Lady Wolves battled their way back throughout the game before erupting for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun Billingsley 13-12.
Layken Jones delivered one big hit after another for Fayetteville, finishing with four hits and four RBIs. Her biggest moment came in the seventh inning when she ripped a clutch two-run double to help give the Lady Wolves the lead for good.
Billingsley came out swinging from the start, collecting six hits in the first inning alone to build the early advantage. Shelby Boice helped power the Bears’ offense with a key extra-base hit during the opening frame. Despite the rough start, Fayetteville chipped away at the deficit throughout the night, staying aggressive at the plate and putting pressure on Billingsley before the dramatic seventh-inning rally.
Fayetteville’s offense exploded in the seventh as the Lady Wolves strung together six hits in the inning to complete the comeback. The Lady Wolves finished with 13 hits in the victory. Bella Epperson and Lucy Epperson each recorded multiple hits, while Brylee Payton added pressure on the basepaths with two stolen bases.
In the circle, Lauren Cook went the distance to earn the win for Fayetteville, battling through a high-scoring game and coming up with key outs when the Lady Wolves needed them most.
“This is a great group of girls and we appreciate all of the support,” Fayetteville head coach Dosson Stubblefield said following the win.
With two wins on the day, including the thrilling comeback over Billingsley, Fayetteville continued its strong run through the regional tournament and advanced to the regional championship game on Wednesday, May 13, at 12:15 p.m. at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
