FAYETTEVILLE, Ala. – The Fayetteville Wolves baseball team picked up a big area win on Thursday, April 2, defeating the Winterboro Bulldogs 15-1 at Landers Field. The victory improves Fayetteville to 2-0 in Class 1A, Area 8 play as the Wolves continue building momentum toward the postseason.
Fayetteville wasted no time getting started at the plate, breaking the game open with a nine run second inning. That early surge provided plenty of support for starting pitcher Adan Hernandez, the Allen Brew Market Athlete of the Week.
The Wolves stayed disciplined throughout the night, finishing with nine hits while drawing eight walks and swiping eleven bases.
Head Coach Matt Collier was pleased with his team’s approach in the area matchup.
“Our guys did exactly what they needed to do to win the game,” Collier said. “We played good baseball all the way around. Our hitters got on base, our pitchers threw strikes, and our fielders played well defensively. Our pitchers didn’t walk anybody, and we didn’t commit any errors behind them.”
Ethan Jones, Connor Crumpton, and Ever Olguin each collected two hits to lead the offense, while Blake McDaniel and Eli Franklin drove in two runs apiece.
Four Fayetteville pitchers saw action on the mound, including Adan Hernandez, Brenton Cantrell, Jackson Payton, and Cam Hammonds. The group allowed just six hits and one earned run while striking out six and issuing no walks.
Following the game, Fayetteville recognized its four seniors Brenton Cantrell, Cam Hammonds, Ethan Jones, and Ever Olguin.
“These seniors mean the world to us and our program,” Collier said. “It is bittersweet because this group were freshmen when I became the head coach, so to see them grow and mature into the young men they are makes me proud. They have brought many big wins and moments to Fayetteville baseball with more to come, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them. We love them all and appreciate all of their hard work.”
The Wolves return to action today with a road trip to Thorsby. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
