CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – According the a report from the Childersburg Police Department, changes that evolved from resident concerns over a growing population of homelessness in Childersburg are making a difference since the first of the year,

Six homeless residents were incarcerated in the Talladega County Jail. Two of those were on felony drug charges, and one was serving time per the Childersburg Municipal Judge. Another was awaiting a Judge-ordered mental health evaluation. Another served time on Criminal Trespass charges.

With direct help from the community, another serving time has been accepted for a rehab assignment to Teen Challenge, “Several people really stepped up, and the young man has strongly expressed his desire to turn things around and is taking positive steps in that direction,” said Chief Kevin Koss.

Another previously homeless person has been placed into an apartment with the help of the community, and is no longer homeless.

“A homeless sex offender has relocated to Sylacauga,” explained Koss, “ and several other homeless transients appear to have left the City.”

The Police Department wrote a dozen written Criminal Trespass warnings, even before the Council adopted Ordinance 1157 to give the City’s Police Department the legal tool needed to help address homelessness issues that have been brought up in Town Hall meetings since the second January meeting.

The ordinance regulates, restricts, and prohibits certain uses and activities on public properties located in the City of Childersburg to protect general welfare and public safety. And with involvement from the community, improvements are happening.
