SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga Parks and Recreation is offering local residents a chance to learn and enjoy the popular tile-based game Mahjong through a new lesson series and ongoing open-play sessions at the J. Craig Smith Community Center.
The Mahjong Lesson Series will take place on the Tuesdays of March 10, 17, and 24 at 6:00 p.m.
Instructor Cindy Womack will lead the three-week course, designed for beginners and players seeking to improve their understanding of the game in a relaxed, welcoming environment. The cost is $30 per person, and class size is limited to eight participants.
Mahjong, traditionally played with four players, involves drawing and discarding tiles to form specific winning combinations such as sets and sequences. The game blends strategy, memory, and luck, offering both mental stimulation and social interaction.
Advance registration is required and can be completed online at Sylacauga.Recdesk.com or by calling (256) 249-8561.
In addition to the lesson series, two Mahjong open-play sessions will be available for experienced players or those wanting extra practice. Sessions are on Friday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. and Tuesday, March 31 at 6:00 p.m. Open play is free, with no registration required. Participants should bring their Mahjong card and arrive ready to play.
