SYLACAUGA, Ala. – A new pickleball class for homeschool students will begin next week at the J. Craig Smith Community Center in Sylacauga.
Instructor Randy Clark is leading the weekly lessons on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. from Sept. 3 through Dec. 10. The program, designed for ages 6-18, is being offered at no cost.
Although registration closed Wednesday, Aug. 27, officials said the class is fully equipped to welcome participants with or without their own paddles. Extra paddles and balls are available at the gymnasium.
The class is part of Sylacauga Parks and Recreation’s efforts to give homeschool students opportunities to stay active while learning a fast-growing sport.
Pickleball has surged in popularity across the country in recent years, drawing players of all ages with its mix of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Clark, a local instructor and pickleball enthusiast, is volunteering his time to teach the fundamentals and encourage new players to get involved.
