HARPERSVILLE, Ala. – The Town of Harpersville plans to build a new baseball field with help from a $150,000 grant announced recently by Gov. Kay Ivey.
In addition to the baseball field, the Land and Water Conservation Fund grant will help pay for amenities associated with the field, including lighting, a storage building, a batting cage, and new sidewalks at J.W. Donahoo Recreation Park.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $300,000, with Harpersville providing the remainder of the funding.
“This new ball field will encourage exercise, healthy competition, and community togetherness for families in the Harpersville area of Shelby County,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to announce this project, and I applaud town leaders for working to enhance and expand recreational opportunities.”
The Land and Water Conservation Fund, a program of the U.S. Department of Interior, was created by Congress in 1965 to assist states with the development and preservation of outdoor recreational facilities. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs manages the program in Alabama.
“Recreational facilities such as baseball fields increase a town’s quality of life and contribute to the overall health of the community,” Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in commending Harpersville for making these improvements.”
Gov. Ivey notified Harpersville Mayor Theoangelo Perkins that the grant has been approved.
