SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Board of Education honored longtime member Dr. Steve Marlowe during its regular June meeting Tuesday night, June 24, recognizing his 18 years of service.

Appointed to the board in 2007, Marlowe served three years as vice president and four as president. He played a key role in multiple school renovation projects, including upgrades to Sylacauga High School in 2011, 2013, and 2015, and policy updates in 2014 and 2023. Most recently, he was instrumental in the 2025 renovations of Legion Stadium and Douglass-Martin Court.

“I am grateful to the City Council members who entrusted me with the seat back in 2007,” Marlowe said. “I’ve had some wonderful colleagues during my 18 years on the school board. I’m also thankful for my family and the support they have shown me while I’ve been on the Board of Education.”

Superintendent Dr. Michele Eller praised Marlowe for his leadership and dedication, saying he left Sylacauga City Schools better than he found it.

Beyond the school board, Marlowe serves on several regional education and economic boards and is a member of the Sylacauga Rotary Club. He was named Sylacauga’s Citizen of the Year in 2021.

A longtime football official, Marlowe has worked high school and college games since 1991 and currently serves as an SEC referee. He recently officiated the College Football Playoff National Championship Game between Ohio State and Notre Dame.

He and his wife, Amy Hubbard Marlowe, have been married 28 years and have two children, Tommy and Grier, both graduates of Sylacauga High School.
