ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. – Central Alabama Community College continues to be a key economic driver in its region, contributing $97.5 million to the local economy in the Fiscal Year 2023-24, according to a newly released economic impact study.
The study, conducted by Lightcast, highlighted the college’s influence through operations, student spending, and alumni contributions, supporting approximately 1,450 jobs.
The college’s operational spending alone generated $16.1 million, while construction projects added $1.4 million, supporting 20 jobs. Student spending contributed another $5.3 million and created 96 jobs.
Central Alabama Community College alumni, benefiting from higher earnings due to their education, contributed the most — $74.6 million — supporting 1,058 jobs.
“Around eight percent of our students are from outside the region, contributing significantly to the local economy through their spending,” said President Jeff Lynn.
The study also detailed the college’s role in workforce development, particularly in health care, construction, and manufacturing. The Health Care and Social Assistance industry alone benefited from 266 jobs supported by the college’s economic activities.
The investment in education at Central Alabama Community College yields strong returns, with students seeing $6.40 in higher future earnings for every dollar spent. Taxpayers also benefit, gaining $1.20 for every dollar invested, with an estimated $22.8 million in additional tax revenue over students’ careers.
Beyond economics, the college’s social impact totals $253.9 million in Alabama, including increased student and business income and public savings.
“Our students leave CACC with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the local economy and to secure stable, well-paying jobs,” said Lynn. “This educational investment, both for the students and the community, is crucial for long-term prosperity.”
