Childersburg Council will vote on eliminating police service outside city limits

SHARE NOW

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg City Council is looking to vote on eliminating police service outside the city limits. The proposal comes on the heels of new state regulation that prohibits the collection of sales taxes in their designated police jurisdiction.

During their Sept. 3 work session, the Council discussed proposed Ordinance #1146. However, due to a lack of unanimous voting for immediate consideration, the proposal was tabled to the Sept. 17 meeting. Councilman Brandon Robinson cast the dissenting vote.

In other business, Resolution 2024-14 gave approval for Mayor Ken Wesson to execute a USDA loan application for city facilities. The projects proposed for a 40-year loan at one percent annual interest for the renovation of the former Childersburg Medical Building on Hwy 280 for a new Police and Judicial complex.

The city is also looking to finance the demolition of the current Police Department headquarters and replace it with additional bays for the Childersburg Fire Department.

Also included was a roof replacement project for the city-owned former Limbaugh Hardware building on 1st St. downtown.

The Council approved Resolution 2024-15, which will allow for the purchase of a 2024 Explorer for the Fire Department through Stivers Ford from the state bid list. The cost will be $38,003 from the General Fund.

Kristopher Phillips was classified as a Firefighter/Advanced EMT at a pay rate of $14 per hour. Approval was given to pay Fraternal Order of Police dues for 16 officers at $30 each and a total of $480 from Fund 13.

The Council approved advertisements with Childersburg Baseball and the CHS Quarterback Club at $300 each from Fund 23.

Approval was given for payment of invoices in the amount of $86,708.66.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 17 at 6:00 p.m.
