FAYETTEVILLE, Ala. – The Fayetteville Lady Wolves volleyball team had a home opening tournament last Saturday, and they showed why people are starting to take note that they will be hard to deal with all year.
According to MaxPreps, the Alabama rankings for volleyball are out, and for Class 1A, the Lady Wolves are at the top with the number one ranking followed by Kinston at two and Spring Garden is at three.
Coach Ginger McArthur said, “The girls have worked very hard over the off season, and it is starting to show in our play.”
There were four teams in the tournament – B.B. Comer, Coosa Central, Winterboro, and the host Wolves. The Lady Wolves took two of three games from B.B. Comer to move to the next round, and the Lady Bulldogs did the same in their match with Coosa.
The Lady Wolves trailed Winterboro 20-12 in their first game and came back to take that first game, 27-25. The Lady Wolves would then go on to win the championship of their hosted tournament.
This reporter was thoroughly impressed with the play of all teams, but especially the Lady Wolves. Kenleigh McArthur and Bella Kelley are among the top five sophomores in the state for aces, Bella with 18 and Kenleigh with 17.
McArthur also leads her team with 36 kills. This is fifth in the state, and Kelley is third in the state with 83 assists and fourth in the state with 45 digs which also leads the team in those categories.
Savannah Thrower is in the top five juniors in the state with 14 aces, and Aubriegh Burns is in the top five seniors of the state with 33 kills.
The Lady Wolves went 5-0 in the tournament and now hold an overall record of 7-1. They will once again take on B.B. Comer today, and will travel to Coosa Central for another tournament on Saturday.
