SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council held its first meeting of 2024 on Thursday night, Jan. 4, at 6:00 p.m. with a work session prior at 5:00 p.m.
At the meeting, Mayor Jim Heigl proclaimed January as Human Trafficking Prevention Month and noted the rise of influenza both regionally in the Southeast and throughout the city.
The city council voted to recommend the approval of a Special Use Permit for AT&T to install/co-locate an existing telecommunications tower located at 596 Sorrell Rd. to provide wireless services essentially within the corporate limits and police jurisdiction of the City of Sylacauga.
The council approved the FY23 Alabama Annual Report.
Authorization was granted for Mayor Heigl to enter into an agreement with JMCM Consulting to prepare a grant application for FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters grants toward the purchase of a new fire engine. A five percent grant-writing fee and a five percent local match is required only if grant is awarded.
They also approved the 011 – Lounge Retail Liquor – Class II application from Nirav P. Patel, co-owner of Keshav Swami LLC, Dinesh C. Patel, member of Keshav Swami LLC, and Mahendra C. Patel, member of Keshav Swami LLC, which is located at 300 W Ft. Williams St.
Mayor Heigl was approved to enter into an agreement and release in reference to the settlement of case #CV-2023-90016.000.
Additionally, the council approved the request/recommendation from Human Resource Specialist Jayne McGee to sell the unused vacation leave of one unnamed city employee.
The city council approved FY23 Accounts Payable invoices in the amount of $584.77, FY24 Accounts Payable invoices in the amount of $194,652.17, and the December payroll in the amount of $470,227.77.
The next Sylacauga City Council meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6:00 p.m.
