SYLACAUGA Ala. – After years of waiting, re-construction is underway at Veterans Park.
Last Tuesday, the Sylacauga City Council approved up to $150,000 to construct a new memorial at Veterans Park, along the 280 corridor.
Local veteran groups are meeting this week to give more input on the final design.
The current veterans wall project began in 2002, and the 283 markers will be recreated as part of the new memorial. The walking track and landscaping improvements were developed as an earlier project between the Sylacauga Beautification Council and the City.
Removal of the current memorial is underway and tiles that are not broken will be preserved. Current tiles will be made available to families and replaced on the new memorial free of charge.
Anyone interested in newly memorializing their veteran may buy a plaque by creating an account at sylacauga.recdesk.com, then, under Programs, selecting General, Pinecrest Walking Trail Plaque.
