SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Driver license numbers will soon have another digit in the state of Alabama.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) soon will add a digit to driver license numbers to accommodate the state’s growing population.

The change will become effective Dec. 1, 2018.

All new driver licenses and non-driver IDs will contain eight-digit numbers as opposed to the traditional seven digits. The longer numbers already have been used on state-issued non-driver IDs.

The change will not affect Alabama driver license holders who were issued seven-digit numbers. For questions concerning this change, please call 334.242.4400.
