SPD on watch as heavy race traffic expected through Sylacauga today

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Heavy traffic is expected in Sylacauga on Monday, especially downtown Sylacauga, as NASCAR fanatics head home from the weekend’s races.

Sylacauga Police Chief Kelley Johnson said he believes traffic volume on Hwy. 21 may triple as cars, trucks, campers and RVs make their way down Sylacauga’s main stretch. “The majority of the motor homes wait until Monday morning before they leave, so the biggest day will be Monday morning,” Johnson said.

Due to the high traffic volume, SPD will be out in full force in the Marble City, but Johnson said he does not believe there will be major issues such as drunk driving.

“We don’t see a lot of drunk driving here in our town although it may happen near the race track. There are so many state troopers and officers that do a good job as people are leaving the race that keep drunk drivers from making it down here,” he said.

Johnson also said Talladega Superspeedway allowing people to spend the night Sunday and leave Monday allows for safer roadways and traffic than years in the past.
