SYLACAUGA, Ala. – A 23 year law enforcement veteran was shot and killed in the of duty last night in Moody.
With riots and protests aimed towards law enforcement happening now across the nation, SPD Chief Kelley Johnson emphasized how vulnerable of a time it is for something like this to happen.
“First I would like to send out our condolences to his family, and his fellow law enforcement team in Moody, and we will be keeping them in our prayers,” said Johnson. “It affects us because he is doing the same job that we do, and the reality of the situation is that it can happen here or anywhere for that matter.”
Williams, who was a father of three, is the second Alabama officer who has been shot and killed in the line of duty in 2020.
“I think now that the riots are getting the way they are getting, this type of thing could be subject to spike, especially since every person in our profession is being lumped into one group,” said Johnson. “Regardless, we have a job to do, so we have to keep it going.”
According to Johnson, the station still has to handle all calls the same way as usual amid the protests towards law enforcement.
