SYLACAUGA, Ala. – For a period of time, holding a high school graduation seemed impossible. Seniors across the country felt there was no chance to walk across the stage.
After COVID-19 restrictions were eased last week by Gov. Kay Ivey, graduations will happen, and seniors will be honored. Sylacauga High School has announced it will hold its graduation Saturday, May 30, at 9:00 a.m. at Legion Stadium.
The pandemic has created some obstacles, but, according to SHS principal Chad Murphy, the ceremony will take place as close to normal as possible, with social distancing being the exception.
“We will be following all guidelines provided by the Department of Public Health as far as spacing goes,” said Murphy. “We are still finalizing some of those plans, but we will have more spacing between the graduates.”
Seating arrangements are going to be a little different in Legion Stadium. According to Murphy, there will also be a few more entrance and exit areas, in addition to the original Broadway Ave. entrance.
There was always an attendee limit in years prior. SHS seniors will be given ten graduation tickets a piece for their family and friends.
To accommodate those who may be nervous to attend such a heavily populated event, the graduation will be live streamed in a couple of different places. One avenue to watch graduation will be the Sylacauga City Schools Facebook Page.
