SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga City Schools employees were praised by city officials at Tuesday’s City Council work session.
As Superintendent Dr. Jon Segars gave a brief report on the school system, he was met with commendation for the way the SCS teachers and administration have handled the abrupt transition to distance learning.
Councilwoman Tiffany Nix shared a story of her daughter’s teacher video chatting with her on a Sunday night to ensure all school work was completed. Nix complimented the teachers saying, “We have the best teachers around.”
“That really means a lot to our whole team,” said Segars. “I’m amazed at what we’ve done, and we’ve exceeded what we thought it would look like 45 days ago. We stuck with our strategic plan. It was embraced by our teachers and staff.”
Segars told SylacaugaNews.com school will conclude on May 21, and asks parents, who have essentially become home-school teachers, to hang in there.
“Just hang on. I know it’s tough to home school. We are trying to make it as easy as possible, get to summer, then get next year started,” he said.
Segars reiterated the schools latest statements on searching for dates for events like prom and graduation, but those have not been determined. “We are sending out updates, and we plan to do a blended or virtual graduation close behind the end of the school year.”
