Winter Storm Warning in effect for East Central Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Winter Storm Warning now in effect until 7:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9. NWS also warns drivers to use extreme caution on roadways.

…WINTER STORM WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM CST SATURDAY…

* WHAT…Snow continues. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute into the overnight hours. Total snow accumulations of 5 inches will be common, with higher totals up to 10 inches in the higher terrain in east central Alabama. Most of the accumulations will on be grassy and elevated surfaces, but some roadways will become covered.

* WHERE…Portions of central, east central and west central Alabama.

* WHEN…Until 7 AM CST Saturday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times and hazardous driving conditions. Be especially careful as trees, limbs and power lines may come down due to the weight of the snow.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions are occurring. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

SHELBY, COOSA, ELMORE, TALLAPOOSA, CLAY, TALLADEGA, RANDOLPH,
CLEBURNE, AND CHEROKEE COUNTIES AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS
FOR EACH COUNTY ARE REQUESTING THAT RESIDENTS USE EXTREME CAUTION
ON AREA ROADWAYS. TEMPERATURES WILL FALL BELOW FREEZING
OVERNIGHT AND WILL CAUSE ROADWAYS TO FREEZE, LEADING TO HAZARDOUS
TRAVEL CONDITIONS.

WINTRY MIXED PRECIPITATION HAS ACCUMULATED AND WILL CONTINUE INTO
