[WEATHER ALERT] Roads and streets remain closed to traffic; hard freeze warning continues

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga, Childersburg, and Talladega city streets and all Talladega County roads are still closed this morning. Authorities have advised that it may be mid-morning before temperatures are above freezing and roads can be safely reopened.

A hard freeze warning remains in effect for most of the state through 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. Temperatures will range from 4-20 degrees through this morning and from 12-19 degrees on Thursday morning. The National Weather Service does not forecast temperatures above freezing throughout the day today, and a Wind Chill Advisory is in effect through noon with very cold wind chills ranging from minus 6 to 10 degrees.

Road conditions across the state deteriorated overnight with rapid temperature drops. ALDOT crews are working to keep interstates and major highways passable, but non-emergency travel is discouraged until temperatures rise and road conditions improve.

EMA and law enforcement in neighboring counties including Tallapoosa and Elmore issued Civil Emergency Messages this morning and are requesting that residents remain off roadways until at least early afternoon.

In addition to hazardous travel, prolonged exposure is dangerous to people, plants, property, and pets and could result in exposed water pipes freezing and possibly bursting.

Every public school system in Alabama is closed today, meaning that nearly 727,000 students are home. City administrative offices are also closed.
