SYLACAUGA, Ala. – March 29 is nationally recognized as Vietnam Veterans Day.

On that day in 1973 the last of the United States soldiers were pulled from Vietnam. The day was first recognized by President Obama in a Presidential Proclamation on March 29, 2012. In the proclamation Obama said “Yet, in one of the war’s most profound tragedies, many of these men and women came home to be shunned or neglected — to face treatment unbefitting their courage and a welcome unworthy of their example.”

On March 28, 2017, President Donald J. Trump signed Senate Bill 305 into law, officially declaring the day as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

President of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 945, Jon Hall, is excited about Thursday’s significance. “This is a day to commemorate and recognize the fact that someone made a mistake,” said Hall. “It’s a day to recognize that people forgot to welcome us all home when we came back from Vietnam.”

The City of Sylacauga will host a celebration honoring Vietnam veterans on Thursday at the flag pole in front of City Hall on Broadway Avenue. Roosevelt McCray, president of the Purple Hearts Association of Alabama, will speak and Mayor Jim Heigl will give a proclamation.

Following events at City Hall, the celebration will move to the American Legion Post 45 where there will be a flag dedication ceremony and refreshments provided by Hickory Street Cafe, Curtis and Son Funeral Home. The Sanctuary will send its cooking team to cook refreshments also.

There is a heavy chance for rain, 90 percent, on Thursday which could call for a change of plans. In case of rain, the event will be held in its entirety at the American Legion.
