SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Read Across America Week continues in schools in the city of Sylacauga and around the area, and students are loving it. The week was created to honor Dr. Seuss and encourage reading among young students.

The outfit theme for Wed., March 1 was “crazy socks” in honor of the famous Dr. Seuss book Fox in Socks. Students from Indian Valley Elementary and Pinecrest Elementary had their crazy socks on, but they were missing something very important to the days theme…a fox. Luckily the friendly Fox from 98.3 Fox FM filled that void.

The Fox has been seen around town in recent weeks visiting businesses and strolling the sidewalks of Broadway Ave. Wednesday morning he arrived early at Indian Valley to surprise students as they unloaded from buses and jumped out of parents’ cars. He greeted the children with high fives and hugs before they made their way into their classrooms and even roamed the halls of the schools meeting and greeting many of the students.

Since it is Read Across America Week, the Fox decided he wanted to honor multiple students from Indian Valley and Pinecrest who have excelled in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program this school year. For those not familiar with AR program, students are given reading level goals and point goals that are achieved through reading books and then performing well on computerized tests. The students honored from Indian Valley were Ian Kirkland, Ethan Williams, and Carlie Kelly.

Following his trip to Indian Valley, the Fox made his way across town to Pinecrest Elementary to visit the top reading students from the third, fourth, and fifth grades. The top performers from Pinecrest are Evan Hartsill, Kaylee Robbins, and Natalie Robinson.

The top readers from both schools were given a 98.3 Fox FM gift pack, and both schools were given Fox in Socks books courtesy of the Fox and 93.3 Fox FM parent company Marble City Media. “Dr. Seuss inspired a world of creativity and enhanced learning,” said Marble City Media’s director of business development Michael Brannon. “We are very excited to be playing a small part in promoting creativity, reading and education in the community.”
