SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Utilities Board, a key provider of high-speed internet services to Sylacauga area industries, businesses, and residences, has issued an advisory to its customers regarding a recent cyberattack affecting an estimated 200,000 computers in at least 150 countries.
Older versions of Windows operating systems, for which Microsoft made critical security updates available starting two months ago, were exploited. Windows 10 does not appear to have been affected.
Malware known as WannaCrypt is a form of ransomware that encrypts a personal computer’s data, requiring a payment of $300-$600 in order to restore access. As of earlier this week, cybersecurity firms estimated than some 45,000 computers worldwide remained infected.
The email from the Utilities Board’s network administrator reminded users to keep computers updated and make sure an antivirus utility is being used and current. Microsoft includes free antivirus software as part of its latest operating systems.
