Sylacauga tennis courts refinished; surfaces now lined for pickleball

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga Parks and Rec. has repaired and refinished the city’s tennis courts.

The courts, according to Sylacauga Parks and Rec. Director Jim Armstrong, were beginning to feature cracks that needed to be fixed.

Armstrong told SylacaugaNews.com the courts were last repaired nearly a decade ago. The cracks in the asphalt repaired a decade ago did not resurface, but new cracks have.

“We had some new cracks developing in the courts, so we wanted to go ahead and have it repaired,” said Armstrong.

This project was somewhat time sensitive according to Armstrong as the city is preparing for the Sylacauga High School tennis team to host sectionals on the courts.

“We wanted the courts looking really good for that, and of course it just needed to be done as general maintenance,” Armstrong explained. “We had an opportunity. The weather held off for us and now its done.”

The courts will also now be used for a sport other than tennis.

Pickleball is a growing sport among all Americans. The game is very similar to tennis. It is played on a 20-foot by 44-foot court divided in half by a very low net.

“This is becoming a very popular sport,” said Armstrong. “We went ahead and lined it off. We had people ask about it and we decided to do it since it would not cost us anything extra. It’s like adding another sport.”
