SYLACAUGA, Ala. – After not being held in more than a year, Coffee with a Cop returned to Sylacauga. The event gives people in the community an opportunity to meet and socialize with the Sylacauga Police Department in an informal setting.
Police Chief Kelley Johnson said there was a great turnout from the community. He said more than 70 people came to Burger King to visit and say hello to Sylacauga police officers this morning.
“They enjoy seeing us,” said Johnson. “They’ve talked about their support for us in what we do and we thank them for coming out.”
Recently, relationships between some police departments and their communities have been strained all across the nation. Johnson said that was not a motivation to hold the event.
“It doesn’t have anything to do with race, and nothing has sparked this event to come back,” Johnson said. “It’s something we have planned since the end of last year.”
SPD hopes to continue building relationships with the people of Sylacauga. Johnson said he hopes to put on the event once every three months.
