SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity. These three qualities make up the acronym for a new service organization at Sylacauga High School, LEO Club.
LEO Club is for Sylacauga High School students and is integrated with Sylacauga Lions Club. Members participate in Lions Club community service efforts as well as individual LEO Club activities.
On Monday, LEO Club held a Charter Night ceremony to commemorate the club’s first year. Sylacauga Lions Club members, in addition to District Governor-Elect Pedro Pino, were in attendance. Pino gave remarks prior to the chartering.
The 2016-17 LEO Club officers were honored by Sylacauga High School faculty sponsor Courtney Monnette. Officers then signed the club’s charter, followed by the induction ceremony of 2017-18 officers. Following the ceremony, members and guests enjoyed a small reception.
“[LEO Club] is a great opportunity for us, as Lions, to share with the members the importance of serving the community,” said Sylacauga Lions Club President Craigger Browne.
Browne gives all credit to two Sylacauga High School seniors, Levi Parker and Yvette Kidd, the club’s respective President and Vice President. “They’ve done a phenomenal job, in terms of getting [LEO Club] started and serving as leaders. We couldn’t have asked for anything more; they’ve gone above and beyond.”
Parker and Kidd, both members of the high school’s Scholar’s Bowl team, became involved in the Lions Club organization by connecting with Adam Pinson, CACC Scholar’s Bowl coach and Sylacauga Lions Club member. At Pinson’s request, Parker and Kidd attended a summer forum at Troy University with other LEO Club members.
“I really enjoyed the Youth Forum we attended in Troy over the summer. We met with high-ranking Lions Club members and learned club development skills,” added Kidd.
Following the forum, Parker and Kidd established LEO Club at Sylacauga High School. “We both went through the process of setting up the club through Student Council, recruiting members, and so forth,” said Parker.
Parker echoed Kidd on enjoying his trip to the Youth Forum, also adding that he greatly enjoyed the community service activities in which LEO Club participated with Sylacauga Lions Club this year.
“I hope the club will continue to grow over the next few years. With the new inductees, I think the club will continue to expand and become a well-established club at the high school,” said Kidd.
At the conclusion of the charter ceremony, Browne announced that Sylacauga Lions Club will vote to establish a new award – the type of which is to be determined – in the name of Levi Parker and Yvette Kidd.
