Sylacauga kicker Riley Keith perfect on season

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga High School senior, Riley Keith, is a football player who is standing out as he is maintaining a perfect season and continuing to claim records.

Sylacauga’s “Mr. Reliable” only started playing football two years ago, his sophomore year. Keith grew up playing soccer. Only having one kidney, he could not participate in contact sports. When the previous kicker, Bailey Frost, graduated, Coach Matt Griffith was in need of someone new. Keith’s father approached Coach Griff about giving Keith a chance, and Griff talked to Keith about kicking for the team.

In the first game of the 2015 season, Griffith did not put Keith in, but the kicker he would have used had Keith not joined the team. The Aggies lost that game by three points, the amount of extra points missed in that game. The next week’s game was Keith’s first, and he did not miss an extra point. He was then named the extra point kicker. He maintained this perfect record until the 9th game of the season against Tallassee, where two of his extra points were no good.

Overall, Keith has done extremely well for the Sylacauga Aggies in his career, making 133 of his 139 attempted extra points, and being perfect with 7 out of 7 field goals. Keith’s leg has broken multiple records so far. He broke the single season scoring record by a kicker his sophomore year with 56 points, formerly 54, and broke the career scoring record by a kicker in the first game of the 2017 season against Chilton County which was 112. Keith is still adding to that record with a perfect season so far. The only record he does not hold is the field goal distance record, which is currently at 43 yards. If Keith gets the chance this season, he could break that record, as well, as he has been good for a 50 yard field goal in practice.

As the season moves on, and the Aggies race towards the 5A playoffs, Keith’s skills will become even more important. Points in the postseason cannot be taken for granted, and with Keith’s reliability, Coach Griffith and his team should have nothing to worry about in the kicking game.

As mentioned before, Keith also plays soccer for the Sylacauga Aggies. He does this, among other things including playing bass and electric guitar in the praise band at his church, Odena Baptist Church, and being involved in several honor societies and clubs at school while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. Keith would like to play football in college as he gets a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
