Sylacauga High School placed on lockdown

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – After reports of threats at Sylacauga High School on Tuesday, the school was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning. Dr. Todd Freeman, Superintendent of Sylacauga City Schools, and Kelley Johnson, Sylacauga Chief of Police, addressed the situation in a press release Wednesday afternoon.

On Tuesday, September 27, Sylacauga City Schools and the Sylacauga Police Department were made aware of rumors on social media regarding threats of violence at Sylacauga High School. Consistent with our safety plan and our efforts to protect our students, SHS was placed under a lockdown Wednesday at the beginning of school until approximately 1:00 PM.

School administrators and police officials implemented all measures possible to ensure the safety of our students. While there has been no credible threat of violence made toward SHS, our school employees and police remain vigilant in carrying out safety measures. We urge students, parents, and community members to be responsible in the use of social media as it relates to rumors. We encourage everyone to report credible threats to the police immediately.

Sylacauga City Schools will continue to operate a normal schedule this week as we prepare for Homecoming activities on Friday. The Sylacauga Police will have an increased presence at school and during Homecoming events. The Sylacauga City Schools and Sylacauga Police continue to have a strong partnership in our commitment to make our schools a safe place for learning. We appreciate the support of our parents and community that strengthens that commitment.
