SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Report cards have been released not only for students for in the Sylacauga City Schools system, but also for the school system.

State Report Card for each school and district, shows that Sylacauga City Schools scored above the state average in every category, earning an overall “B” rating.

Scoring indicators measure academic achievement, academic growth, and chronic absenteeism for all Alabama schools. In addition to these factors, high schools are also graded on the school’s graduation rate and college and career readiness aptitude. While academic achievement is based on the combined student performance in standardized tests, academic growth differs in that this category measures improvement from August benchmark tests to April standardized testing. The weighted scores of each category are combined for the overall grade. The state grades are based on the previous school year testing data.

Sylacauga High School demonstrated significant improvement in academic achievement. College and career readiness also showed marked improvement, and last year 70 percent of graduating seniors went on to college. School performances of Indian Valley Elementary, Pinecrest Elementary, and Nichols-Lawson Middle each build on one another leading up to the higher challenges at the high school level.

Superintendent Dr. Jon Segars remarked, “We are pleased with the gains made in this year’s report card and are proud of the hard work of our students, teachers, and administrators. Even so, we know full well there always is room for improvement, and student learning, with emphasis on reading and math, continues to be our priority.”
