SYLACAUGA, Ala. – On Tuesday evening, the Sylacauga City Council approved the purchase of the long-vacant Food World building and 8.2 acres of property on North Main Ave. Most recently appraised at $614,300, the 47,000 sq. ft. building was constructed in 1989.

Absentee owner Sylacauga Perlmix LLC agreed to donate the property to the city, with costs capped at $30,000 to cover transaction fees and commissions. While the city has no immediate plans, Council President Lee Perryman explained in an afternoon work session that the property had much prospective value to the city for possible redevelopment purposes.

The Council also approved an Animal Shelter job description, approved a police officer’s 2017 National Lifesaver Conference attendance, approved city court representatives’ attending the Alabama Municipal Court Clerks and Magistrates Association’s annual conference, accepted a Fiscal Year 2016 audit from its CPA/Business Advisor, and approved July payrolls and accounts payable.

Sylacauga City Schools Superintendent Dr. Todd Freeman spoke with the council about school system finances during the work session.

Prior to the afternoon work session, the Council heard from Chambless King Architects. According to principals, the firm has led the completion of over $2 billion in public projects across the southeast, including a downtown and riverfront master plan for Montgomery in 2001, stimulating public and private investment as well as economic opportunities.
