SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Malik Crawford is one of the best athletes to come through Sylacauga High School in quite some time.

The graduating senior starred on the basketball team in his senior season, leading the Aggies to their first basketball state title since 1988 with an overtime win over Eufaula in the BJCC in Birmingham.

In the 5A State Basketball Championship, Crawford was named tournament MVP. He was a finalist for Mr. Basketball in the state and 5A Player of the Year. Crawford was also named 2018 Regional MVP in 2017 and 2018.

On Wednesday, Crawford made it official that he would continue to play basketball at the next level.

With his peers in attendance, the the star player for Sylacauga signed a scholarship to Snead State Community College in Boaz, Alabama.

“This means a lot because I know everyone doesn’t get the opportunity to play college basketball,” said Crawford. “I just want to thank the lord for this opportunity.”

Sylacauga Head Coach William Copeland credited Crawford’s work ethic on and off the court as to why he has been so successful during his time at Sylacauga High School. “He’s a great young man off the court,” Copeland said. “If he didn’t do what he was supposed to do in the classroom he wouldn’t be here today. On top of that he’s a talented basketball player who is willing to put in the work to be a college basketball player.

Snead State is getting a very productive basketball player in Crawford. He averaged 17.4 points per-game his senior year while shooting 56 percent from the floor. He also averaged 6.4 rebounds per game, picked up 50 steals, and blocked 30 shots. In his career, which featured him as a varsity player since the end of his 9th grade season, Crawford scored over 1,100 points.

“Malik will bring a lot of athleticism and energy to our program on the defensive end of the floor,” said Joseph Brooks. Brooks is the assistant men’s basketball coach at Snead State.”We expect him to be a really good player for us.

Crawford will also be walking into a good situation at Snead State. The Parsons won their own state title in hoops this year, and Crawford is excited about joining another winning team.

“I like the coaches and the atmosphere at Snead State,” Crawford explained. “It is a great program for me to continue to further my basketball career.”

“We’re losing some guys and bringing back some guys,” Brooks told SylacaugaNews.com. “I think Malik can jump right in and help us get back to the state championship.”

Crawford is Copeland’s first college signee in his five year tenure at Sylacauga which Copeland hopes to give his players some momentum as others come through his program.
