Sylacauga Airport hosts regional pilots for preliminary soaring meet

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Central Alabama Soaring Society (CASA) hosted soaring pilots from across the nation for the GTA (Georgia-Tennessee-Alabama) Preliminary Soaring Meet at the Sylacauga Municipal Airport over the weekend.

Participants in the event were from Huntsville, Auburn, Chelsea, Montgomery, Atlanta, Mount Juliet, Tn., Marietta, Ga., Sandy Springs Ga., Mooretown, Vt., and Destin, Fl.

Airport director Tommy Dobson told SylacaugaNews.com the participants were not only impressed with the way CASA organized and planned the event, but with the facilitates of the city’s airport. Dobson said many of these pilots are used to flying out of sod fields. That is not the case at Sylacauga’s airport. The runways at Lee Merkel Field are smoothly paved and kept in mint condition.

Dobson said the weather was great for the weekend after the rain from Thursday and Friday, but not necessarily great for soaring. The wind did not allow pilots to do everything planned for the weekend, but pilots did get into the air and have some fun.

A large soaring competition will be held at Sylacauga Municipal Airport later this year in September. Dobson said there was buzz and excitement surrounding participants about coming back to the Marble City in the near future.
