SYLACAUGA, Ala. – As Alabama Power electrical rates will increase in 2019, Sylacauga Utilities Board customers will not be affected.

Alabama Power has over one-million residential customers that could see an increase in their power bill if they go over a specific amount of power. That threshold is set at 1,000 kilowatts of power. Michael Sznajderman, a spokesperson for Alabama Power, said this cost will vary with the amount of power used.

Sznajderman said the organization is changing the way it operates because of more than $200 million in government-mandated costs, mostly for water quality and coal ash handling. However, citizens of Sylacauga will not see an increase.

Sylacauga Utilities Board General Manager Mitch Miller assured there should be no increase for Sylacauga Utilities Board Customers. “There should not be any impact to the electric customers for the Sylacauga Utilities Board from this,” Miller explained.
