SYLACAUGA, Ala. – A national coffee chain has begun its process of opening a location in the Marble City.

At a Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Monday, Sylacauga Mayor Jim Heigl announced Starbucks, a coffee house with more than 28,000 retail stores, has submitted its building plans to the City of Sylacauga and plans to open a location.

The coffee giant will open in the new Marble City Square shopping complex on Hwy. 280 that currently hosts T.J. Maxx, Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-A, and more.

Heigl said the plans were submitted to and approved by the the city’s engineer and showed it being built directly beside Chick-fil-A.

Oddly, Starbucks announced in June it would close 150 under-performing stores this year which is triple the amount it normally closes each year.

Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce Exec. Dir. Laura Strickland told SylacaugaNews.com she also received confirmation at Monday’s luncheon.  She told SylacaugaNews.com she does not worry about the retail growth on Hwy. 280 because her members, mainly downtown Sylacauga businesses, offer different products and different services.

Heigl explained the city has seen no timetable on Starbucks breaking ground in Sylacauga, but does not expect it to take place too far into the future.
