SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga Aggie Basketball is hosting a winter camp for the future of Sylacauga High School hoops. All Sylacauga City School students in grades four through six are invited to participate free of charge.
Campers will meet every Saturday morning at the Sylacauga High School gym from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. starting Nov. 19 through Feb. 5. The only Saturday campers will not meet is on Christmas Eve.
So what can campers expect on the first day?
Junior Varsity Head Coach Joel Jones said campers will go through trials on the first day to showcase their talent. After the trials, a draft will take place that will divide kids up in teams. SHS coaches said they hope to have enough kids to divide up into eight different teams for both boys and girls.
Camp instructors will consist of current Sylacauga High School boys and girls players and current coaches. According to Jones, the camp will be a great learning experience for everyone. He said the kids get to come out and learn the game of basketball, while the current players learn about coaching.
The inaugural elementary basketball camp tipped-off in 1976, but has not been held the last few years. Its purpose in the past was to help SHS coaches identify who would be the future stars of Aggie basketball. The same concept applies this year.
“This is something we needed to bring back if we are going to take Sylacauga basketball on to the next level,” said Head Girls Basketball Coach Derrick Crawford. “This could pay dividends six to seven years down the road if we do this thing right.” Crawford went on to say that it is vital for SHS coaches to identify talent early.
Aside from finding the best talent, SHS coaches said they strongly encourage everyone to let their kids come out and get hooked on the game of basketball.
Participants register Saturday morning, Nov. 19. It is free and open to elementary school students.
