SHS to hold instructional sessions on use of new Google Chromebooks for parents and students

SYLACAUGA, Ala. –  Sylacauga High School will hold instructional meetings for parents and students regarding the distribution and use of new Chromebooks. As part of the district’s Digital by Design initiative, every SHS student will be issued a Chromebook for classroom work and research.

Like SylacaugaNews.com previously reported, starting this fall, all Sylacauga City Schools students in grades 3-12 will receive a Google Chromebook. Students in grades K-2 will have access to Chromebooks as well as iPad devices while at school. Sylacauga City Schools Technology Director Michael Robinson told SylacaugaNews.com the project has been a massive undertaking. Almost every network switch at Indian Valley Elementary, Pinecrest Elementary, and Nichols-Lawson Middle School has been or will be replaced. Wireless access points at all four schools have been or will be updated. The technology upgrades began in late October and are complete at Nichols-Lawson and Sylacauga High School.

Robinson says the goal of adding Chromebooks is not to replace teaching and learning; it is an additional component to add to the Sylacauga City Schools learning environment.

“There are already a lot of phenomenal things occurring in the school district. Digital by Design is just another one of those things. Instead of scheduling time in the computer lab or booking a cart of devices, the Chromebooks are there, ready for usage,” added Robinson.

Seniors will meet July 18; juniors on July 20; sophomores on July 25; and freshmen on July 27. All meetings will be held in two sessions beginning at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the gym.

Because parents must sign the agreement contract for use of the device, they are urged to join their students to hear this vital information. If a parent cannot attend the scheduled meeting time for their student’s grade, they can attend one of the other sessions.

In addition to receiving information about the Chromebooks, student schedules will be ready for pick up on the assigned days. Parents also may also use this opportunity to turn in residency verification, pay for Chromebook use and other fees, and purchase parking decals. Teachers will be available to share class requirements.
