SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The state of Alabama will hold its annual “Back to School” sales tax holiday this weekend, July 21-23.

Beginning in 2006, the sales tax holiday was enacted in the state on the first Friday in August and ended the following Sunday. For 11 years, the holiday has been when many parents do all of their school shopping for the entire school year for their children.

This year, statewide Act 2017-120 changed the annual “Back to School” sales tax holiday to be held on the third full weekend of July, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ending at midnight the following Sunday.

Many area municipalities will participate in the money saving holiday including; Sylacauga, Childersburg, Talladega, Oak Grove, Lincoln, and Alexander City.

The list of items you can buy tax free, saving potentially hundreds of dollars, is vast. Items range anywhere from computers and laptops to socks. Many clothing accessories, such as a belt buckle, are excluded from the exempt list. Here is a quick list of exempt clothing items:

Belts
Boots
Caps
Coats
Diapers
Dresses
Gloves
Gym Suits
Hats
Hosiery
Jackets
Jeans
Ties
Pajamas
Pants
Rain jackets
Sandals

Electronics may be a little tricky. Here is a list of computer related items that will be exempt from taxes this weekend:

Computer Storage Media; diskettes, CDs
Handheld electronic schedulers (cell phones not included)
Personal digital assistants
Printers
Printer supplies (paper, toner, ink)

Almost all of your obvious school related items such as markers, crayons, paper, spiral notebooks and binders are exempt this weekend. For a detailed list of items click here. You can also check out the Alabama Retail Association website to find lists of items included as exempt.
