SYLACAUGA, Ala. – When it comes to Friday night football, dropping the ball typically is not a good thing… unless you’re a fan of the opposing team. But this Friday night, the Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement (SAFE) is excited to drop the ball!
Hundreds of balls, in fact.
Sylacauga’s Promise 12th Annual Ball Drop will be held this Friday, Sept. 29 following the Sylacauga VS Childersburg football game. The event will take place on the SHS soccer field at Legion Stadium at 9 p.m.
Hundreds of golf balls will be dropped from a crane as the crowd watches to see whose ball falls closest to the hole and closest to a chance at $5,000.
SAFE added an extra challenge to this year’s event. Instead of the prize being awarded to the owner of the ball that gets closest to the hole, the owners of the two closest balls will compete in an “Ultimate Putt-Off” on a later date. The winner of the putt-off will be awarded the $5,000 prize.
Other prizes include $100 for the person who sells the winning ticket and $100 to the person selling the most tickets.
Tickets are available for a $5 tax-deductible donation at many local businesses this week and can also be purchased at the ballgame. Ticket holders do not have to be present the night of the event to win.
The Ball Drop is sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Pursell. The crane will be provided by Conn Equipment Rental, Inc., and tickets are provided by Swen Communications.
How donations benefit the community
Proceeds from ticket donations will benefit Sylacauga’s Promise The Alliance for Youth efforts. Among those efforts are the Bridges after-school tutoring program, Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY), Parents as Teachers, and Sylacauga Grows Community Garden.
Next month, SAFE will celebrate 20 years of providing the five promises to the community: caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, an effective education, and opportunities to serve. SAFE currently serves Talladega, Clay and Coosa counties.
