SYLACAUGA, Ala. – In a few short weeks high school seniors will soon be high school graduates. Students from around the area will begin preparing for their next steps in life, and for many, this includes furthering their education at a two-year or four-year college.

Expenses for college students and their families can add up quickly. At the University of Alabama, direct and indirect costs, can add up to over $30,000 for an in-state student. That number can be nearly $20,000 more expensive for an out-of-state student.

Tuition alone at Auburn University for a student taking 15 credit hours per semester will cost nearly $10,000. That number does not include room and board.

Since 2013, RadioAlabama and SylacaugaNews.com has assisted local students and families with the cost of college. Each year RadioAlabama and SylacaugaNews.com provide a lift for graduating seniors through scholarships, helping their families to offset the costs of post-secondary education.

“We are always excited about this annual opportunity to provide an extra boost for graduating seniors. Although our intent is to recognize academic achievement, we also want to reward integrity, leadership, initiative, entrepreneurial spirit communication skills, and community involvement,” stated Lee Perryman, President of RadioAlabama. “We received many applications this year, and all were impressive.”

RadioAlabama and SylacaugaNews.com received 22 applications from local students. After review, the field was narrowed down to four students from four different schools — Sylacauga High School, Fayetteville High School, Childersburg High School, and B.B. Comer Memorial High School.

Sylacauga High School’s recipient is Mary Moore. While in high school, Moore was a member of the Key Club, National Honor Society, Junior Scholastic Society, and Future Business Leaders of America. She will graduate with a 3.6 GPA.

Kallen McCAin from Childersburg also earned a scholarship. McCain was extremely busy in high school regarding extra-curricular activities. McCain played varsity football, baseball and soccer, earning all county honors in football and soccer. He was a member of Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christina Athletes, Honors Club, Mu Alpha Theta,  and Key Club. McCain will attend the University of Alabama and pursue a career in secondary education. He will graduate with a 3.84 GPA.

Fayetteville High School’s winner is Shelby Skinner. Skinner was a member of Beta Club, Key Club, and the Prom Committee. Skinner will attend Southern Union State Community College and pursue a career in Nursing-Health Sciences. She will graduate from Fayetteville with a 4.0 GPA.
