SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Over $900,000 in renovations and improvements have been completed to the Sylacauga High School baseball and softball fields, and the Sylacauga City Schools System is set to show them off just as the two seasons ring in.

The projects definitely cut it close to the beginning of both seasons, but as SCS Superintendent Dr. Todd Freeman promised, both facilities will be completely ready to go for the first pitch of the year.

Here is what you can expect at both facilities:

Renovations to the SHS softball facility include:

  • New concession stand and press box
  • New seating
  • New dugouts and back stop
  • New sod, in-field, and irrigation system.

Renovations for the SHS baseball facility include:

  • New press box, concession stand, and restrooms
  • New dugouts
  • New dressing rooms and restrooms added on to the already existing indoor hitting facility
  • New exterior fencing and entrance into the stadium
  • Additional accessible handicap parking.

In a written statement,  SCS officials said, “The athletic renovations are the result of the commitment of the Sylacauga City Schools Board of Education to provide state-of-the-art facilities for its students. The softball and baseball renovations are the final projects in the athletic improvements plan that began in the summer of 2015. In addition to baseball and softball, the athletic facility renovations included Legion Stadium, SHS soccer field, and SHS basketball gymnasiums. The projects were made possible because of the tremendous community support of extending the 9.5 mil property tax through a vote in February 2015. Since 2010, Sylacauga City Schools has invested over $32 million in improvements to its academic, arts, athletic facilities, and infrastructure.”

The softball and baseball projects were a joint effort of the school system, City of Sylacauga, Sylacauga Parks and Recreation, Sylacauga High School softball and baseball booster clubs, and Sylacauga Babe Ruth Baseball.

Ribbon cutting ceremonies have been scheduled for next week where the school system will officially show off its impressive facilities. The Aggie Softball Field at Pinecrest will be dedicated on Tuesday, Feb. 20 between the junior varsity and varsity games. Approximate time for the ceremony will be 6:00 p.m. The newly renovated Walton Cruise Field, on Main Ave. behind Noble Park, will be dedicated on Friday, Feb. 23 between games, with an approximate time of 6:30 p.m.
