SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Nearly 60 percent of the City of Sylacauga’s paving project is complete and the project is ahead of schedule according to Sylacauga Mayor Jim Heigl.

Heigl explained to SylacaugaNews.com the venture has moved 25 percent quicker than originally expected and will surely be completed before the initial expected completion date of Nov. 10.

The project is expected to be completed under budget its $3.04 million budget. He said the city will save over $150,000 by the way its paying for the labor and materials. He said the city is paying for the labor and materials every month directly as opposed to including a third party. “We are under budget and plan to keep it that way for the entirety of the project,” Heigl said.

Lately, work on roads in the city has stopped, but that work will recommence on Monday July 16. “They have been off for the last two weeks to fulfill a previous contract in another location,” the mayor said. “They’ll be back to work here on Monday.”

When work resumes, N. Norton Ave. will be the top priority along with 4th St. and Avondale Ave.

Many have noticed the smooth surface of the already-completed roads, like Fort Williams St., but they will get even more smooth. Heigl said crews will come back through and raise the lids on the manholes drivers routinely hit in order to make them them even with the new blacktop.

Heigl said people can expect and people should be excited about the progress, efficiency and the quality of the new streets when they are completed. He laughingly and jokingly said a woman called him to tell him to unpave the roads because they were “so smooth she almost fell asleep behind the wheel.”
