SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Alabama Council on Economic Education announced two Nichols-Lawson Middle School students have placed in the top 10 in a state-wide economics contest.

Madelyn Milo and Quincy Simmons are the two students who placed in the top 10 of the Color the Concepts contest. The Illustration contest, co-sponsored by State Farm, gives students the opportunity to learn and demonstrate their knowledge of economic concepts.

The program aligns with the Alabama course of study. Math teacher Gaye Coley introduced the program to her NLMS students.”We studied how the different economic concepts have real life applications to students and their families,” she said. “Each student chose their concept, researched it, and illustrated the concept.”

Coley noted all of the work was completed solely by the students and she is proud of her students’ accomplishments.

Milo’s focused on the concept of inflation. She used fluctuating gas prices as an example for her topic. Quincy chose the concept of managing a weekly budget, using illustrations of income and expenses. Both received a $25 prize.

Honorable mention was Gracie Welch who focused on natural resources. She received a $10 cash award.
