SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The City of Sylacauga has suffered severe storm damage as storms began to come through the area just before 3:00 in the afternoon.
Heavy winds have blown multiple trees down onto roads. The Sylacauga Police Department is asking for people to stay off of roadways until further notice. Multiple traffic lights are not working. Fallen trees, power outages, or debris have been confirmed on Hwy. 148, Hwy. 21, Hwy. 280, East 3rd St., Park St., West 8th St., Fort Williams St., and South Bolton Ave.
One tree fell and hit a vehicle on Hwy. 21 near Curtis and Son Funeral home. The massive tree fell across power lines and knocked out power in the area.
Michael Adair was driving on Hwy. 21 when it happened. “It was crazy. I was driving by when the tree fell and sparks started flying.” he explained.
Adair also told SylacaugaNews.com a truck tried to drive through the area and became caught in the tangled power lines causing more sparks to fly.
Tents were up at the Comer Sports Complex for the 8U Cal Ripken state tournament. Many were thrown hundreds of yards and destroyed.

Sylacauga Police report Bay St. at Norton Ave., Park St., at Broadway Ave., Betsy Ross Lane are cleared at this time. Many other areas still affected.
All lights on Hwy. 280 are up and working properly.

Travel is restricted to one southbound lane as you enter Sylacauga’s Valley View area on Hwy. 21. Trees and lines are still down on East 3rd St., Clay St., South Bolton Ave., Walnut, while other areas such as Nashville Ave. still have large limbs in the roadway. Even though the roads may be passable, as visibility decreases please remain aware of officers and workers continuing to clear debris and utility lines.
