Malzahn takes podium after worst offensive performance as head coach last week

AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn players and Head Coach Gus Malzahn spoke to the media on Tuesday as the Tigers prepare for their third game of the season against Mercer. Auburn is coming off of a loss against the third-ranked Clemson Tigers where Gus Malzahn boasted the worst offensive performance of his coaching career.

In the 14-6 loss in Death Valley, Auburn Quarterback Jarrett Stidham was sacked 11 times. His offensive line was no match for the other Tigers in the game. On his offensive line Gus Malzahn said,”We will see how practice goes. We believe in our players. They were put in some tough situations at times. I have got to do a better job. Our coaches have got to do a better job to put our players in better situations. We believe in those guys and they are going to improve. As I said earlier, you are going to see it every week. I’m not ready to sit here right now and say there will be changes. We will see how practice goes. We will challenge those guys. Those guys were put in some tough situations against a very talented defensive line.”

After the Clemson game Malzahn said he believes he will still have a goof offense in 2017 despite the 17-yard second half performance. Today he said he believes his team will continue to gel throughout the year although currently ranked 106th in total offense in the FBS. “Looking at this season, it’s the fact that we have a new coordinator, we have a new quarterback and a couple of new guys up front. Chip Lindsey is learning his offense, his players are getting used to him, and that’s really the facts of the matter right now,” he explained.

Changes will be made on the sidelines going into week three. Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey will move up from the sideline to the coaches booth. Just last week Lindsey told media how comfortable he was coaching from the sideline, but that no longer seems to be the case. “I think as a coach, you always look at how you can improve and what you can do as a coach to make your players better, so it’s not an overreaction. It is more of a reaction to what is best, and really Chip’s comfort zone is upstairs – being able to see the field, see defenses — that’s his comfort zone. Originally, he felt pretty strong and felt he needed to be there with the quarterback and look him in the eye and all that. You learn and you look at things and what’s best for the team, and he feels very confident that it’s going to help him, and I know it will. The fact that Herb [Hand]  is going to be down there with his offensive line I think will help, too. As a coach, you really look for things to help your team, and I believe that will happen,”the head coach said.

Auburn is set to play Mercer on Saturday before jumping into conference play on Sept. 23 versus Missouri.
